Payam Banazadeh is the founder of Capella Space, the synthetic aperture radar company he started in 2016 at age 24 while finishing graduate work at Stanford. Before Capella he was a systems engineer at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, working on interplanetary missions. Capella launched the first American commercial SAR satellite, captured what was then the highest-resolution SAR image taken from space, and raised more than $250 million from investors including DCVC and Spark Capital. He stepped back from the CEO role in October 2023 when Frank Backes was appointed, and remains on the board.
