John Gedmark

Co-founder and CEO

About

John Gedmark co-founded Astranis in 2015 to build small geostationary communications satellites that bring affordable broadband to underserved regions. Before Astranis he was the founding executive director of the Commercial Spaceflight Federation, the industry trade group that lobbied to legitimize commercial human spaceflight, and earlier ran flight operations at the X Prize Foundation. He holds a BS in Aerospace Engineering and Physics from Purdue and an MS in Aerospace Engineering from Stanford, and took the company through Y Combinator's Winter 2016 batch. Under his leadership Astranis launched its first commercial satellite, Arcturus, in 2023 and has raised over $350 million from BlackRock, Andreessen Horowitz, and Venrock. He is one of the loudest American voices arguing for a domestic, vertically-integrated GEO satellite industry.
