Ian Brooke is the founder and CEO of Astro Mechanica, the Y Combinator-backed San Francisco startup building Duality, the world's first electric-adaptive jet engine engineered to be efficient from takeoff through Mach 3 plus. A lifelong pilot and self-described 'full-stack mechanical engineer', Brooke handles everything from CAD to CNC to commercial pitches himself. The insight behind Astro Mechanica is to use electric motors to decouple the fan from the combustor, letting each component spin at its optimal speed instead of being yoked to the turbine core. His longer arc is to replace conventional airline travel with low-cost, on-demand supersonic flight - and ultimately to build the airplane he has been sketching since childhood.
