Terraform Industries

Solar + air + water in, pipeline-grade synthetic natural gas out

EnergyMaterialsBiotech (industrial)
What they build

The product

The Terraformer: a system stack combining (1) a low-cost electrolyzer producing hydrogen from solar power, (2) a direct air capture (DAC) unit pulling CO2 from atmosphere, and (3) a chemical reactor that combines them into pipeline-grade synthetic methane (CH4). First end-to-end synthesis demonstrated April 2024. Operating from a Burbank, CA 'castle' facility; expanding into adjacent product lines (ammonia, methanol, cement, steel, silicon, aluminum, titanium, desalination).

Why it matters

The thesis

Founded by Casey Handmer (ex-JPL/Hyperloop), Terraform is the most ambitious bet on cheap solar as the upstream of basically all energy-intensive industry. The thesis: solar gets cheap enough that synthesizing hydrocarbons from air becomes economic, displacing fossil natural gas drop-in (no infrastructure change). They have qualified an under-$100/kW electrolyzer stack — a number that, if real, breaks the cost curve for green hydrogen and everything downstream of it.
