ICON

Robot-printed homes for Earth and the Moon.

What they build

The product

ICON designs and operates the Vulcan robotic 3D-printing system, a gantry-style construction robot that extrudes a proprietary cement-based material called Lavacrete to print the walls of permitted, code-compliant homes. Around the printer they run an integrated design and build practice (CODEX architectural design language, ICON Prime spec-home developer arm) and a NASA-backed lunar program, Project Olympus, which is developing autonomous off-world construction systems intended to print habitats and infrastructure on the Moon and Mars.

Why it matters

The thesis

Housing is the single largest cost line for American families and the most under-industrialized big sector in the US economy. ICON is the only US company that has actually printed dozens of permitted single-family homes at production speed and is also the prime contractor on NASA's lunar surface construction program, which makes them simultaneously the leading domestic example of robotic onshore construction and the entry point for American off-world infrastructure. If automated, robot-built housing scales, it pulls construction productivity off its 50-year flat line and makes building homes a manufacturing problem instead of a labor problem.
