The product
Astro Mechanica's Duality engine is a hybrid-electric combined-cycle jet engine that runs as a turbofan at low speed, a turbojet near supersonic, and a ramjet at Mach 3+. Splits power generation (gas turbine) from propulsion (electric fans) so the engine adapts across flight profiles instead of being optimized for one regime.
The thesis
Today's jet engines are point-designs — efficient in only one slice of the flight envelope. An adaptive engine could enable supersonic passenger aircraft 3x faster than airliners, or launch payloads to orbit 3x cheaper than all-rocket systems. Strategic implications for both defense and commercial flight.
